On Sia’s “The State of Cryptocurrency Mining”

David Vorick, lead developer of Sia, recently shared a blog post titled “The State of Cryptocurrency Mining,” which provides a perspective into the cryptocurrency mining world.  

First off, we’d like to express our appreciation for David and what he’s achieved with Sia. The crypto community revolves around transparency and trust, and we hope to someday work with David and his team.  

That said, the article reflects some persistent misunderstandings about our business, and we’d like to take the opportunity to clear up the confusion. We’d like to briefly address the most egregious ones.  

“Playing Dirty” 

The article accuses Bitmain of “playing dirty,” claiming that that the company has attempted to block Obelisk from manufacturing in China.  

Considering the truly vast number and diversity of suppliers in China, it’s difficult to consider that Bitmain could possibly exert such powerful control over a competitor’s supply chain to the degree the article suggests. The article does try, though. Indeed, this section—fully six percent of the total article—tries to accuse Bitmain of “playing dirty” while stating twice that there is no evidence of same. 

There are numerous suppliers and other third-party agencies involved in the manufacturing of a miner, both in China and elsewhere.  

This is, at its very bottom, a conspiracy theory, much like some of the other ones we frequently encounter. This brings us to the next item.  

A3 and “Flooding the Market “

The article asserts that Bitmain floods the market with its mining rigs. Here is what really happened: At launch, Bitmain introduced a strict one-miner-per-user batch allocation policy and other methods [1][2] in order to restrict hoarding and combat centralization. The number of miners made available per round was purposely limited to help further regulate their introduction into their respective ecosystems. Since then, we’ve enforced this policy with the launch of all ASIC miners for cryptocurrencies that can be profitably mined by GPUs. The article’s calculations here are merely speculative. 

Again, in an article that makes a number of accusations, we wanted to tell our own side of the story. Our license-to-operate within the cryptocurrency ecosystem is vital to our business and we do not take it for granted. We will continue to provide industry-defining mining hardware and services, while remaining sensitive to the communities in which we participate.

Clarification of Bitmain’s Batch Releases

Recently there has been incorrect information posted about sales and distribution of Bitmain miners. We would like all of our customers to have the correct information:

1. As explained in our previous blog post, Bitmain has no official vendors. We encourage all our customers to purchase only from our official web site.

2. We do not sell our machines continually. We sell in batches, based on our production schedule. When a batch is sold out there are no more sales until the next batch is announced.

3. We do not reveal the number of miners we are producing, or future production plans. If such information is advertised or claimed, it is not from us and is not reliable. Customers should not make purchase plans or decisions based on such claims.

Demand for Bitmain miners is very high. We strive to be fair and to give our customers the best opportunity we can to purchase our miners.

Fraudulent Websites and Scams

Since the Bitcoin price broke new all-time highs this year, there has been an increase in the number of fraud attempts targeting Antminer buyers.

Although most of these attempts fail, there have been reports of some users falling prey to these scams.

We are even more concerned for our users since one of our old servers containing our users’ information was compromised by unknown attackers last week. This could mean that you may be contacted by impostors who pretend to be Bitmain’s official representative or Bitmain’s reseller to get payment from you for Antminers that they cannot and will not deliver.

Please remember:

  1. We do not have any official distributor or reseller anywhere

We receive various queries about whether X or Y is an “official distributor” or “official partner” of Bitmain’s products simply because X or Y claims to be an “official distributor” or “official partner” of Bitmain. We have no official representatives or distributors in any country. This brings us to the following point.

Regarding “Bitcoin Cash”, ViaBTC and Bitcoin ABC

On 22 July 2017, the Chinese digital currency exchange ViaBTC added support for the trading of a possible new fork of Bitcoin that is being called “Bitcoin Cash” or “BCC”. This fork is based on the idea of UAHF, which is a contingency plan first proposed by Bitmain in April to protect the Bitcoin ecosystem from the threats proposed by the BIP148 fork (aka UASF). Because it is a contingency plan, the UAHF will be implemented by us only if the UASF fork happens and poses an imminent risk to the Bitcoin ecosystem. This has been further described in our blog post.

Bitcoin ABC was proposed at The Future of Bitcoin conference in Netherlands and is a software led by developers who believe in increasing Bitcoin’s blocksize.

The development of UAHF is now led by supporters of Bitcoin’s blocksize increase. Bitmain cannot and does not control their opinions.

Following are some clarifications regarding Bitmain’s current stance:

  1. Bitmain and ViaBTC only share an investment relationship in which ViaBTC operates independently. The founder of ViaBTC has ten times the voting rights as those of the investors of ViaBTC. Therefore, the position of ViaBTC does not represent Bitmain’s stance.
  2. The New York Agreement is a joint effort of the global Bitcoin community. As one of its signatories, Bitmain has actively supported the smooth implementation of Segwit2x and will continue to run the btc1 software on all our mining pools, namely Antpool, BTC.COM pool and ConnectBTC, in the foreseeable future.
  3. We are closely observing the “BCC” movement and do not rule out the possibility of supporting both Segwit2x and BCC.

חיסול: אם שרשרת ה-UASF מופעלת ואם שרשרת ה-UASF זוכה ברוב היקף הגיבוב, הרי שה-nodes שעוקבים אחרי השרשרת המקורית יתארגנו מחדש ויתחילו לעקוב אחרי שרשרת ה-UASF. במקרה כזה, מספר משמעותי של רישומי עסקאות פיננסיות ייעלם. זה סיכון ש-USAF nodes כופה על nodes שמתכוונים לעקוב אחרי השרשרת המקורית. מנגד, UAHF אינו מאיים באותו סיכון על ה-nodes שעוקבים אחרי מערכת חוקים אחרת.

למה אנו צריכים תכנית מגירה נגד BIP148?

לפי BIP148, כשה- MTPשל השרשרת הוא ביום ג’ 1 באוגוסט 2017 בשעה 12:00 לפי שעון גרינוויץ’ (זמן יוניקס (1501545600, או לאחר מכן, nodes  BIP148יתחילו לייתם בלוקי ביטקוין שאינם מסמנים ביט 1 בנקודת המזלג UASF שלה. שינוי חוק הקונצנזוס הופך את מערכת החוקים לקטנה יותר משרשרת מקורית שלפני הפעלת BIP148. שרשרת UASF יוצרת סכנה שהשרשרת המקורית תחוסל. אם אין תכנית מגירה, כל פעילות כלכלית שמתרחשת בשרשרת המקורית אחרי נקודות הפיצול של UASF תהיה בסכנת חיסול. יש לכך השלכות קשות מאוד על כל האקוסיסטם של ביטקוין. UASF הוא מתקפה נגד משתמשים וחברות שאינם מסכימים להפעלת SegWit כרגע ללא הגדלה של גודל הבלוק, שהיא סעיף חשוב מאוד בהסכם הונג קונג שנחתם על ידי קהילת ביטקוין העולמית בפברואר 2016. סכנת הרה-ארגון של השרשרת משמעותית יותר מכפי שהוצג, כפי שניתח פיטר ר’ ב-BUIP055,

רציונל להגנה מפני רה-ארגון

כאשר p הוא חלק כוח הגיבוב הכורה את שרשרת הבלוקים הגדולים ו-q הוא חלק כוח הגיבוב שנותר בשרשרת הבלוקים הקטנים [2]. כאשר 75% מכוח הגיבוב תומכים בבלוקים הגדולים יותר, ההסתברות לרה-ארגון היא 11%.

 

תכנית הגנה

זמן ההפעלה ניתן לקונפיגורציה. אנו נבצע את המזלג הקשה 12 שעות ו-20 דקות אחרי UASF. חותמת זמן יוניקס תהיה 1501590000.

קיים חוק “חייב להיות גדול” בבלוק המזלג. גודל הבלוק של בלוק המזלג חייב להיות מעל 1,000,000 בייט. בלוק המזלג הוא הבלוק הראשון שיאמץ את שינוי חוק הקונצנזוס.

הוא יסכים לקבל בלוק שגודלו פחות מ-MB8 ואנחנו, הכורים, נבצע הגבלה רכה של גודל הבלוק לפחות מ-MB2.

חוק מזלג רך יוסף לפרוטוקול כדי להגביל את ה- sigops לכל עסקה עד ל-K20.

ביטמיין תשתמש בחלק מהיקף הגיבוב שלה עצמה ותעבוד עם קהילת המפתחים על הכנת תכנית מגירה המבוססת על UAHF. אנו נפתח אפשרויות לכורים להצטרף אלינו מרצונם.

ביטמיין תכרה את השרשרת במשך מינימום של 72 שעות אחרי נקודת הפיצול של BIP148 עם אחוז מסוים של היקף גיבוב שיסופק על ידי מפעלי הכרייה שלנו.

סביר להניח שביטמיין לא תשחרר מיד את הבלוקים שנכרו לרשת הציבורית אלא אם הנסיבות ידרשו זאת, מה שאומר שבהתחלה ביטמיין תכרה שרשרת כזאת בפרטיות. בכוונתנו בסיטואציות הבאות לשחרר את הבלוקים שנכרו לציבור (רשימה לא ממצה):

  1. שרשרת BIP148 מופעלת וכתוצאה מכך זוכה בתמיכה משמעותית מתעשיית הכרייה, כלומר אחרי ש- BIP148כבר פיצלה בהצלחה את השרשרת.
  2. הסנטימנט בשוק כלפי מזלג קשה לבלוק גדול הוא חזק, ורציונל כלכלי דוחף אותנו לכרות אותו, למשל, שער החליפין הוא לטובת ביטקוין בבלוקים גדולים.

פיתוח תוכנה

כרגע קיימים לפחות שלושה צוותי פיתוח לקוחות שעובדים על הקוד של המפרט. כולם רוצים לשמור על בשקט הרחק מהפרופגנדה ומצבאות טרולים של חברות מסוימות. הם יחשפו את עצמם כשירגישו מוכנים לכך. המשתמשים יוכלו להתקין את התוכנה ולהחליט אם להצטרף ל-UAHF. התוכנות אמורות להיות מוכנות לפני 1 ביולי, ואז הן יוצגו בחי ב-testnet.

BUIP056   יפותח כדי לטפל בנושא גודל הבלוק לפני שיתקבל בהיקף נרחב מודל משילות מתמטי של גודל הבלוק. כפי שנוכחנו בשנים הקודמות של הוויכוח, הכורים התגלו כשמרנים מאוד וכמוכנים לעבוד עם הקהילה הכלכלית הרחבה.
